Many therapists are wounded healers

Let’s be real. Many of us got into this field to learn how to heal hurts that we’ve experienced. But many of the therapists I work with got into the field because it’s safe.

Therapy is a one-sided relationship with great depth from the client and empathetic support from the therapist. It’s a safe way to relate to others. You can get to know someone deeply without the risks of opening up your own heart. Too often, therapists become experts at avoidance strategies. We keep busy to keep our own mental and physical health needs at bay.

Many therapists I work with tend to be avoidant of self disclosure in their personal relationships. Sometimes, they’re not even aware of their own thoughts, emotions, and body sensations because they focus their mental and emotional energy toward others.

And because we know how minds and emotions work, it can be even more difficult for a therapist to break through their unconscious walls. Therapists are notorious for using their psychological knowledge as a defense. Even when you’re willing to seek therapy and know what you want to work on, these patterns of avoidance and deflection are strong.
